This semi desert region of Rajasthan is one of the most colorful and artistic regions of India. Shekhawati, which means 'the garden of the Shekha', owes its name to its former ruler Rao Shekha (1433 AD-1488 AD). The Shekhawati belt, which covers a number of towns like Lakshmangarh, Jhunjhunu, Fatehpur and Nawalgarh, is famous for its beautiful Havelis and stunning frescoes. Besides, the region also has a number of forts, small castles, mosques and intricately designed Baoris (step wells), which draws many tourists.

    
 

Exploring the beautiful Havelis that dot this otherwise flat and barren land can be an interesting experience. Various forms of art adorn the walls and ceilings of these magnificent havelis, which can be dated anywhere between the 18th century and the 20th century. The frescoes that depict various historical and mythological themes deserve a special mention. Tourist Attractions in Shekhawati

Jhunjhunu
Jhunjhunu, the capital of Shekhawati, is the largest town of the district. The Kamyamkhani nawabs built this town in the mid 15th century and it remained under their control till 1730 AD when it was taken over by the Rajput ruler Sardul Singh. Jhunjhunu has a number beautiful havelis and interesting monuments like the Khatri Mahal (the Wind Palace) dating back to 1760 AD, the Sri Bihariji Temple, Kamruddin Shah ki Dargah and the Mertani Baori.

Nawalgarh
Nawal Singh founded this town in the 18th century, which has some of the finest frescoes in the Shekhawati region. Nawalgarh has a number of beautiful havelis like the Anandilal Poddar Haveli, Aath Haveli and the Hodh Raj Patodia Haveli. It also has two forts and a grand palace that has been converted into a luxurious heritage hotel. This is one of the towns you must visit if you travel to Shekhawati.

Lakshmangarh
Raja Lakshman Singh of Sikar founded Lakshmangarh, modeled on the city of Jaipur in the 19th century. There are some interesting havelis located in this region like the Shyonarayan Kyal Haveli and the Rathi Family Haveli. Perched on a hill overlooking the town is a 19th century fort which can give you a magnificent view of the surrounding area. It is a must visit site if you travel to Shekhawati.

» Road: Shekhawati has a good network of roads that connect it to the other cities of Rajasthan. It is 120 km away from Jaipur. Jeeps and local buses can be used to commute locally in Shekhawati

» Rail: The mainline joining Delhi, Jaipur and Bikaner passes through Shekhawati.
